Sindh Governor launches Independence celebrations with tree plantation drive at Governor House

Independence Celebrations for 2026 officially began at the Governor House in Karachi after Governor of Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi planted a sapling to launch a 14-day programme marking Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day. The celebrations will be held under the central theme “Pakistan Hamesha Zindabad”, promoting national unity, patriotism and the country’s peace, stability and sovereignty.

The governor said August is a month of freedom, national pride and unity, adding that beginning the celebrations with a tree plantation campaign reflects both environmental responsibility and national commitment.

Tree plantation campaign opens festivities

Governor Nehal Hashmi said tree plantation is not only an environmental necessity but also a religious and national responsibility. Referring to the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he said planting trees benefits future generations and should become a national movement to address climate change.

He also announced that a modern urban forest is being developed within the Governor House, while members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Sindh chapter and social figures will help promote afforestation across the province.

Fourteen-day programme announced

The Governor House unveiled a series of events leading up to Independence Day, including:

3 August: Distribution of laptops to outstanding students.

6 August: Educational programme on the Pakistan Movement and the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, followed by a study visit to Quaid-e-Azam House and a documentary screening.

8 August: A grand poetry recital celebrating the freedom movement and patriotism.

10 August: A special programme highlighting the contributions of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah for female students.

11 August: Observance of National Minorities Day.

12 August: Speech and debate competitions to mark National Youth Day.

13 August: Main Independence celebration at the Governor House.

14 August: Flag-hoisting ceremonies at the Governor House, Mazar-e-Quaid and other locations.

Message of unity and sovereignty

Governor Nehal Hashmi said the entire nation stands united with Pakistan’s Armed Forces, state institutions and national interests. He added that the vision of Quaid-e-Azam has made Pakistan stronger and more resilient.

He reaffirmed that Pakistan would never compromise on its independence, sovereignty or national dignity and would continue promoting peace, mutual respect and coexistence in the region.

Referring to recent regional tensions, the governor praised the Pakistan Armed Forces for defending the country’s sovereignty and said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had played an important role in promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
