In today’s digital age, short-form videos like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have become part of the daily routine of both youth and adults. According to experts, these fast-paced videos of a few seconds are affecting attention, memory, and mental balance. A global research review of more than 98,000 people showed that excessive use of short videos leads to problems such as attention deficit, mental stress, anxiety, and depression. A study conducted on college students in China also revealed that anxiety and negative psychological symptoms were significantly higher among young people addicted to short videos. International experts say that sharp graphics and constantly changing scenes stimulate the brain’s reward system, leading to a desire for instant gratification and increased screen time, which is similar to addictive habits. However, according to some research, short videos may help strengthen family ties and reduce loneliness among older adults. According to health experts, the use of videos in itself is not a problem, but its unbalanced and unnecessary use creates negative effects. Experts have advised users to limit screen time, choose positive content, and maintain balance in real life.
