PAKISTAN : Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, primarily impacts children under 5 and is preventable through vaccination. Despite the absence of a cure, the disease has seen a significant decrease, with cases down by 99.9% since 1988. Currently, only two countries remain endemic, showcasing progress in fighting the disease. Until polio is completely eradicated, every child remains at risk, emphasizing the importance of vaccination efforts.
The impact of polio can be devastating, with a potential of up to 200,000 new cases annually worldwide within a decade if eradication efforts falter. Despite recent cases being limited to just two countries, ensuring universal vaccine coverage is crucial to safeguarding all children from the risks associated with this disease.
Rotary and partners have immunized over 2.5 billion children worldwide, marking a significant milestone in the fight against polio. NOW MORE THAN EVER, the efforts to eradicate polio are closer to success. Sindh Emergency Operations Center has planned a special campaign starting from August 15th, aiming to vaccinate millions of children in Karachi. Rotarians will participate in outreach activities using the latest technology to ensure the success of the campaign.
