Bangladesh: Flooding has forced nearly 300,000 Bangladeshis into emergency shelters as heavy monsoon rains wreak havoc across the country. The floods, which have also impacted neighboring India, have claimed at least 42 lives this week, many due to landslides.
Lufton Nahar, a 60-year-old flood victim from Feni, shared his plight: “Our house is completely submerged. My brother rescued us by boat. Without him, we would have perished.” His family is now in a temporary shelter, safe but displaced.
The floods have severely damaged infrastructure, disrupting key highways and railways between Dhaka and Chittagong and complicating relief efforts. Cox’s Bazar, home to approximately 1 million Rohingya refugees, is among the most severely affected areas.
Bangladesh is grappling with these floods amid recent political unrest following the August 5 removal of former leader Sheikh Hasina. As the rain is expected to ease, citizens and student activists have stepped up to collect and distribute aid, aiding recovery efforts across the beleaguered nation.
