ISLAMABAD – National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday arrested Faryal Talpur, sister of incarcerated co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, in mega-money laundering case.
Faryal Talpur was taken into custody from Islamabad. As per details garnered, Talpur will be kept at Zardari House in Islamabad that has been declared as sub-jail by the accountability bureau.
Talpur will be produced before the accountability court tomorrow [June 15].
NAB summoned a medical team for the medical examination of Faryal Talpur.
On June-10, Islamabad High Court (IHC) had rejected please filed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur seeking extension in bail after which NAB arrested Asif Ali Zardari.
A day later, an accountability court had remanded the former president in NAB’s custody for 10 days.
Zardari and Talpur have the option of appealing the IHC judgment in the Supreme Court.
The FIA is investigating 32 people in relation to money laundering from fictitious accounts, including Zardari and Talpur. Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July last year in connection with the probe.
The former president’s close aide and Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed and his son, Abdul Ghani, were arrested by FIA in August 2018.
Over 20 ‘benami’ accounts at some private banks were opened in 2013, 2014 and 2015 from where transactions worth billions of rupees were made.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged party workers to remain calm. “The people have never accepted controversial court verdicts,” he was quoted as saying.
