Shehbaz Sharif held a phone call with Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah on Friday, during which the Kuwaiti crown prince “fully endorsed” Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
PM Shehbaz briefed the Kuwaiti leadership on Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He also expressed strong condemnation of recent attacks on Kuwait, conveyed solidarity with the people of the Gulf country, offered condolences for lost lives, and prayed for the recovery of those injured.
The crown prince expressed appreciation for PM Shehbaz’s leadership and Pakistan’s support for Kuwait during the crisis, including a recent letter of solidarity sent to the Kuwaiti government. He also indicated his intention to visit Pakistan once the regional situation stabilizes. In response, the prime minister assured continued constructive engagement by Pakistan to promote peace and stability in the region.
The endorsement comes as Pakistan plays a central role in facilitating indirect US-Iran talks, conducted through structured message relays with support from Turkey and Egypt. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed on X that a 15-point US framework has been shared and is under Iranian deliberation.
Islamabad has emerged as a preferred venue for these initial engagements, thanks in part to Pakistan’s “comparatively balanced position” in the crisis. Regional diplomats highlight that Field Marshal Asim Munir has been pivotal in sustaining the channel, maintaining direct contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, relaying US positions, and facilitating dialogue. His rapport with Donald Trump is also seen as a factor that could help open the door for negotiations with Tehran.
Pakistan’s efforts, endorsed by Kuwait, underline its growing role as a trusted mediator in the Middle East amid escalating tensions.
