KARACHI: Karachi traders took to the streets today, shutting down their businesses in a show of solidarity with a nationwide strike organized by traders’ bodies. Their protest targets the imposition of new taxes and steep utility bills.
Javed Shams, Secretary of the All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran Sindh, spoke out, stressing that the strike was intended to be peaceful. “We’re calling for a consultation on the ‘Tajir Dost Scheme,’” Shams said, distancing the traders from any violent actions. “Our protest is about raising our voices peacefully; we condemn the arson and disruptions caused by miscreants.”
As markets across the country closed their doors, Shams urged law enforcement to address the disturbances created by troublemakers and restore order. The administration faces growing pressure to manage the situation and address traders’ concerns effectively.
