Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho has imposed a ban on heavy traffic in the city, citing that motorcyclists are killed in 57% of accidents.
In a statement to national media on Wednesday, Odho highlighted that every second accident in Karachi is fatal, and the city, the largest in Pakistan, has more than 6.5 million vehicles on the road.
According to the statement, Javed Alam Odho has banned dumpers from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM in the City of Lights, noting that 54 percent of traffic consists of buses, trucks, dumpers, and other heavy vehicles.
The lack of proper infrastructure and traffic regulation enforcement exacerbates this problem. Poorly maintained roads, lack of traffic lights, and a general disregard for traffic laws contribute to the alarming number of accidents.
The police have begun raising fines for negligent drivers, particularly those operating heavy vehicles, and have launched awareness campaigns aimed at improving safety for motorcyclists?
