Israel has threatened legal action against The New York Times over a report about alleged sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees.

Hina Altaf Urges Women to Stand Together After Workplace Harassment Incident

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar ordered officials to prepare a defamation lawsuit against the newspaper.

Report Sparks Strong Reaction

The dispute centers on an opinion article written by Nicholas Kristof.

According to the report, 14 Palestinian men and women from the occupied West Bank shared testimonies about alleged abuse.

The individuals accused Israeli settlers and security personnel of sexual assault and mistreatment.

Furthermore, Kristof’s article described what he called a wider pattern of sexual violence involving soldiers, settlers, prison guards, and interrogators.

However, Israeli officials strongly rejected the claims and called the report false and defamatory.

In addition, the government described the article as one of the worst attacks against Israel in modern media.

New York Times Defends Investigation

Meanwhile, The New York Times defended the article and dismissed Israel’s legal threats.

Danielle Rhoades Ha, a spokesperson for the newspaper, said the opinion piece relied on extensive reporting and investigation.

She also argued that the legal threat aimed to pressure independent journalism and silence critical reporting.

Israel Questions Sources and Timing

The Israeli foreign ministry claimed Kristof relied on unverified sources linked to Hamas-affiliated networks.

Moreover, officials accused the newspaper of timing the article to shift attention away from an Israeli report about the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.

At the same time, Kristof’s article stated there was no evidence showing Israeli leaders directly ordered acts of sexual violence.

Debate Over Media Freedom Continues

Since the Gaza conflict began in 2023, Israeli forces have detained thousands of Palestinians across the West Bank.

As a result, the controversy has renewed debate about press freedom and legal pressure on media organizations in the United States.

Under US law, defamation cases require proof that false information was published knowingly and with harmful intent.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump and his allies have filed several lawsuits against major media outlets in recent years.
