Karachi Meeting: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi embarked on a three-day visit to Pakistan, making notable stops in Karachi and Lahore. Upon his arrival at Jinnah International Airport, he was warmly greeted by Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, and provincial ministers. President Raisi’s visit marks the first by a head of state following the recent general elections in Pakistan.

In Karachi, President Raisi engaged in discussions with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on various economic opportunities between Pakistan and Iran. The meeting centered on investment issues, with a focus on encouraging private enterprise. CM Shah emphasized the vast investment potential across multiple sectors in Sindh.

A ceremony was held at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House, where President Raisi was honored with an honorary doctorate by Governor Tessori. The Iranian president expressed his pleasure at the warm reception and addressed the attendees, highlighting the historic and deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Iran. He commended the brotherly relations, noting the strong religious, cultural, and economic bonds between the two nations.

CM Shah emphasized the importance of unity and mutual support, particularly in the face of challenges such as terrorism, illegal trade, and global climate change. He voiced Pakistan’s unwavering support for a peaceful resolution to the issues in Palestine and Kashmir, calling for Muslim unity in these challenging times.

Lahore Visit:

President Raisi’s visit extended to Lahore, where he was received by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz at Allama Iqbal International Airport. The Iranian president paid respects at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal, a figure of significance for both Iran and Pakistan. He praised the Pakistani people and government for their steadfastness against external pressures.

During his time in Lahore, President Raisi met with Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman, discussing matters of mutual interest. A luncheon was hosted in honor of the Iranian president and his delegation, emphasizing the commitment to strengthening cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts between Iran and Punjab.

CM Maryam Nawaz and President Raisi affirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral ties, focusing on socio-economic development and close engagement between Iranian cities and Punjab for mutual prosperity.

High-Level Meetings and Agreements:

President Raisi’s visit began with a series of high-level meetings in Islamabad, where commitments were made to increase bilateral trade volume to $10 billion over the next five years. He met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, discussing regional stability, security, and strengthening existing ties.

Both countries signed eight agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for cooperation across various fields. PM Shehbaz and President Raisi inaugurated Islamabad’s 11th Avenue, renamed as Iran Avenue, symbolizing the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Iran.

Significance of the Visit:

President Raisi’s visit holds significant importance as Pakistan and Iran strive to mend ties following previous tensions. The visit comes amid regional turmoil, with both countries advocating for restraint and de-escalation in the Middle East.

The joint gas project between Iran and Pakistan, including the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, remains a key focus. The project aims to alleviate Pakistan’s power crisis, with recent approvals for pipeline construction to avoid penalties. Washington’s stance on potential sanctions related to the project adds to the complex geopolitical dynamics.

In conclusion, President Raisi’s visit underscores the shared history and aspirations of Pakistan and Iran, highlighting their commitment to economic cooperation, regional stability, and cultural exchange. The discussions and agreements reached during the visit pave the way for enhanced collaboration between the two nations across various sectors.
