Karachi : The decision by Sindh Police to take action against individuals driving without a license is commendable. However, I propose introducing a temporary driving license system for 16-year-olds to align with modern global standards and facilitate the youth.
In developed countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia, temporary driving licenses are issued at the age of 16. These nations train their youth to become responsible citizens, enabling them to meet daily needs independently while fostering awareness of traffic laws.
Today’s youth cannot be judged under 74-year-old laws as “irresponsible.” They are mentally and physically capable, independent, and prepared for the demands of the modern era. Restricting them with rigid legal standards is an injustice to their potential.
Furthermore, parents who trust their children and know they are capable of driving responsibly should be facilitated through temporary licenses. Imposing unnecessary restrictions due to outdated laws creates undue pressure on families.
I urge the government and all stakeholders to address this issue seriously and, like other developed countries, introduce a modern licensing system for youth in Pakistan. This initiative will empower young individuals and contribute to improved traffic management and awareness nationwide.
