TURIN – On 8 June, there will be a free screening day dedicated to scoliosis patients at the Koelliker Hospital in Turin. In recognition of World Scoliosis Day, the hospital will offer a series of stations equipped to assess spinal health from 9am to 6pm, aiming to prevent structural deformities, especially in adolescents.
“Scoliosis, if diagnosed early,” explains Dr. Bruno, “can be treated effectively without requiring surgery. Children with this condition can and should play sports and carry a backpack with school books. They should engage in normal behavior and participate in physical activity. Importantly, incorrect postures do not cause scoliosis, and adopting inappropriate ones does not cause harm. Wearing a well-made and correctly worn brace or corset can effectively avoid surgery. My team prefers the Chêneau brace, created using computer-assisted CAD-CAM techniques. To evaluate the condition, a quality X-ray is necessary. At Koelliker Hospital, we use the EOS Edge system. This system, the only one in Piedmont, allows 3D reconstructions and millimetric measurements. Traditional radiology cannot achieve this, and EOS uses significantly less radiation.”
World Scoliosis Day, observed annually on June 30th, raises awareness about scoliosis. This condition is characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. This day emphasizes the importance of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment to prevent serious health complications. Consequently, healthcare providers and organizations worldwide host educational events, free screenings, and support activities. These initiatives inform the public and assist those affected. By promoting understanding and providing resources, World Scoliosis Day aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with scoliosis. Furthermore, it encourages regular check-ups, especially for children and adolescents at higher risk.
