The Safe City project in Karachi has officially commenced operations, with its first success marked by the seizure of a vehicle bearing a fake number plate in the Aram Bagh area, as reported by national media.
According to reports, Safe City cameras issued an alert identifying the suspicious vehicle. The driver was promptly apprehended, and a case was registered at the Aram Bagh police station. This marks the first operational action by the Safe City Authority in Karachi, confirmed Director General Safe City, Asif Ijaz Sheikh.
He further shared that the initiative followed directives from the Chief Minister of Sindh and the Sindh Home Minister, who emphasized the immediate activation of installed cameras and the initiation of legal action based on surveillance. Orders were passed on directly to the Inspector General of Sindh Police and the DG Safe City.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of using the system to monitor criminal activities and called for close coordination between the police and the Safe City Authority.
It’s worth mentioning that the Safe City project began in July last year, with advanced surveillance poles installed at six key locations across Karachi. DG Safe City Asif Ijaz Sheikh and PD Brigadier Gil Hassan recently visited Aram Bagh to review the progress.
Initial installation sites included NED University, Aram Bagh, Haqqani Chowk, Pakistan Chowk, and DJ Science College. These poles are equipped with panic buttons and other modern features aimed at enhancing urban safety.
