Boredom has become one of the things that are perceived as the worst in modern fast and screen-filled world. We are so distracted with phones, streaming sites, and endless scrolling. But suppose I should tell you that boredom is not the enemy it is really the gateway to creativity?
Research and psychologists are becoming more apt to note that when the mind is bored, it starts to wander, and in that wandering they find imagination, reflection and innovation. Idle moments have given rise to some of the best ideas, inventions and artistic works. The brain gets the room to think in different and creative ways when we are not always stimulated.
This is a sad reality because children, as well as adults, are not being given the gift of boredom anymore. There is no time to daydream or think original thoughts, all is digital noise all the time.
It is my hope that through this letter, parents, educators and society as a whole come to reconsider boredom. There is no need to hurry up and fill in all the quiet. And just leave ourselves, and our young folks (in particular) to be bored. In such silent places, the imagination gets started.
