The international award-winning Pakistani film ‘Joyland’ has been nominated by the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee for the Oscar Awards.
Joyland, directed by Saeem Sadiq, has been selected for the International Feature Film Award category for the 95th Academy Awards.
By December 21, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will release the final list for all award categories.
The full and final list of Oscar nominations will be announced on January 24, while the presentation show for the 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12.
It should be noted that this year the Oscar committee consists of two-time Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shermin Obaid Chinoy, singer Ali Sethi, writer Omar Shahid Hamid, film critic Rafi Mehmood, actress and filmmaker Samina Ahmed, producer Jerji Seja, screenwriter and director. B Gill, designer Rizwan Baig, cinematographer Mo Azmi and actress Zeba Bakhtiar are included.
Committee Chairperson Sherman Obaid Chinoy has said in his statement that we are sending our best film to compete in the Academy Award.
He added that ‘Joyland’ gives us hope that Pakistani cinema is finally making its place on the global stage.
‘Joyland’ premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France, where it was well received and the film won two awards, the “Jury Award” and the “Queer Palm” at the Cannes Film Festival.
The story of the film highlights the life events of transgenders while the cast of Joyland includes Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Aleena Khan, Sania Saeed, Sarwat Geelani. Suhail Sameer and Salman Peer are included.
