Arif Mahmood “Phase 8 Project”A graduate of the Otterbein College, Ohio, USA, Arif Mahmood is a photographer specialising in photojournalism, portraiture and fashion photography. Within five years of his return to Karachi, Pakistan, Mahmood started doing editorial work for major Pakistani publications. His art practice is reflective of his professional interests, combining all three aspects.

‘Phase 8 Project’ showcases Arif Mahmood’s latest body of work focusing on the artist’s family. This series started in 2007 and ended last year in 2022. The work revolves around the three houses which are central to the artist’s life throughout these years. Going from Mahmood’s own house in Phase 8 to his parents’ house in Phase 5 and his mother-in-law’s apartment in Creek Vista, the images provide the viewer an insight into the “transience associated with time, with an effective dramatic force of facticity”. More importantly, Mahmood considers the ‘Phase 8 Project’ to be a closure to the death of his parents and also his stay in Karachi.
