Another piece of bad news for Cricket Australia: Australian cricket legend Andrew Symonds has died in a car crash.
According to US media, the car of former cricketer Andrew Symonds crashed near Townsville.
Australian police say the crash happened just after 11pm near Townsville.
According to Australian police, a 46-year-old man was in the car who could not recover from his injuries. One man tried to save the victim.
According to Australian media, Andrew Symonds’ family confirmed the incident and thanked those who expressed sympathy.
Symonds, 46, has represented Australia in 198 ODIs, 26 Tests and 14 T20 Internationals. Andrew Symonds was part of the two-time World Champion squad.
Andrew Symonds is the second Australian player to die this year after Shane Warne.
Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warren also died of a heart attack on March 4 this year.
Andrew Symonds was an Australian international cricketer, who played all three formats as a batting all-rounder. He was an important member of two World Cup winning squads. Symonds played as a right-handed, middle order batsman and alternated between medium pace and off-spin bowling. He was also notable for his exceptional fielding skills.
After mid-2008, Symonds spent significant time out of the team, due to disciplinary reasons, including alcohol.
In June 2009, he was sent home from the 2009 World Twenty20, his third suspension, expulsion or exclusion from selection in the space of a year. His central contract was then withdrawn, and many cricket analysts speculated that the Australian administrators would no longer tolerate him, and that Symonds might announce his retirement. On 16 February 2012, Symonds announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, in an attempt to concentrate on his family life.[4]
Symonds died in a single-vehicle car crash in Townsville, Queensland on 14 May 2022, at the age of 46.[5]
