Karachi : I am writing to seek your attention towards a very common issue in Karachi and that is “Power
Outage.” In today’s technology-driven world, electricity is an utmost need of every individual
regardless of their social class. From business works to household chores, every aspect of
survival relies on power supply. However, the extreme power outage in the city has become a
hinderance for residents’ to carry out their daily tasks.
The concerning aspect of this issue is our authorities who barely pay attention to this matter and
are persistent to label it as “load shedding.” However, there is no power supply in the areas like
Lyari, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal for more than 12 hours. Even the affluent areas like Clifton and
Defence also come under this power outage circle, without prior notice. Power outage disrupts
not only peoples’s daily tasks but also risks small businesses and education and more critically,
endangers patients’ lives in hospitals surviving on life-saving equipments.
Furthermore, electricity theft commonly known as “kunda” further adds to the problem. This
practice causes frequent outages and leaves honest consumers with inflated bills. There are
“kunda mafias” supplying electricity illegally in certain areas, taking payments from the
residents. This causes overloading, leading to technical faults which remain unresolved.
Residents complained several times to the authorities and even protested but their voices remain
unheard. I urge power companies to upgrade their systems or invest in sustainable energy like solar. The
Karachi government must also improve the city’s energy infrastructure. I appeal to the authorities
to address this issue urgently.
