It is said that Genoese people from Tabarka, Tunisia, settled here in the 18th century. It was created as Spain’s first marine protected area nearly half a century ago in 1986. Thousands of tourists visit here in the summer, but it is deserted in the winter.The streets of Tabarka are clean and quiet, and there are more cats than humans here. The island also has a historic lighthouse, cemetery and a fortress-like tower. The tall buildings of Alicante are visible on the horizon, but Tabarka has a unique significance due to its simplicity and human scale.
