Saudi-Led Coalition Intercepts Drone Heading Toward Eastern Saudi Arabia

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said early Friday that it intercepted and destroyed a drone heading toward Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Meanwhile, Houthi-affiliated media reported artillery shelling in Yemen’s northern province of Saada.

The coalition announced the interception in a brief statement but did not identify the drone’s operator or specify its intended target. It also provided no information about possible casualties or damage.

Separately, Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV reported artillery shelling in parts of Al-Dhaher district, which borders Saudi Arabia.

Missile Interceptions Reported Across Saudi Arabia

The latest reports come amid renewed military escalation between the Saudi-led coalition and Yemen’s Houthi movement.

On Thursday, the coalition said it intercepted a cruise missile over the Madinah region in western Saudi Arabia. However, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree denied that the group had carried out attacks against Saudi territory that day.

A day earlier, the coalition reported intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh. Falling debris reportedly injured one person and caused minor property damage.

The incidents follow reported attacks on Saudi airports and energy facilities, adding to concerns over the expanding regional tensions.

Background to the Conflict

Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government since 2015. The Houthis have controlled Sanaa and several other parts of Yemen since 2014.

The latest escalation reportedly began in July, following a period of relative calm after a United Nations-brokered truce took effect in April 2022.

The latest developments highlight continuing tensions along the Saudi-Yemen front, with both sides issuing reports about military activity.
