Apparent GTA 6 footage spreads online as Rockstar prepares its next major reveal

More than 18 months after the last official trailer, GTA 6 leaks have created an unexpected headache for Rockstar Games just as the developer prepares to showcase its highly anticipated title again.

Rockstar recently announced plans for an extended 30-minute look at the game in a special presentation on Netflix, ending a long period of silence surrounding the next instalment in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Instead, the build-up to the official preview has been disrupted by a series of apparent leaks showing footage from the game. The clips began circulating online on Wednesday and have rapidly spread across social media and gaming communities.

Rockstar has not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the material or responded to requests for comment. However, several details surrounding the leaks have led industry observers to believe that at least some of the footage may be genuine.

Take-Two Takes Legal Action Over GTA 6 Footage

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has now taken legal action in an attempt to identify people involved in distributing the material.

Court filings submitted in New York reportedly seek information from Microsoft-owned GitHub and Discord about accounts believed to have shared copyrighted GTA 6 content. The legal action highlights the seriousness with which the company is treating the spread of the footage.

Copies of the leaked clips have also been removed from various platforms following copyright complaints. Several online accounts claiming links to the group responsible for the material have subsequently disappeared.

For fans who have waited years to see more of GTA 6, the leaks have generated intense debate. Some have described the situation as a major setback for Rockstar, while industry figures argue that the long-term consequences may be considerably smaller than the immediate online reaction suggests.

Rockstar’s Secretive Culture Faces a New Test

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who worked on Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas before leaving the company in 2009, said Rockstar has historically maintained an unusually secretive approach to game development.

He noted that the secrecy was part of the excitement surrounding previous releases, allowing players to experience a game with relatively little knowledge of what awaited them.

The scale of GTA 6 makes maintaining that secrecy even more difficult. The project has reportedly involved thousands of developers and has been in development for many years.

Video game journalist Wesley Yin-Poole, news director at IGN, said the exposure would be particularly painful for developers who had spent years working on the title.

Questions Grow Over the Motives Behind the Leaks

The group claiming responsibility for the leaks has portrayed its actions as an attempt to challenge what it considers anti-consumer practices by Rockstar. One issue cited by the group is Rockstar’s reported decision not to release a physical disc version of GTA 6 at launch.

However, that explanation has been met with scepticism. The alleged leakers have repeatedly encouraged viewers to send cryptocurrency donations to accounts distributing the material.

Campaign group Stop Killing Games, which opposes digital-only distribution models, criticised the leaks and urged people not to financially support those claiming responsibility.

Yin-Poole said there was widespread doubt over whether the leaks were genuinely motivated by concerns about players, with many observers suspecting that financial gain was the primary motive.

Years of Silence Have Fuelled GTA 6 Speculation

Rockstar’s secretive marketing strategy has also contributed to the intense speculation surrounding GTA 6. Only two official trailers have been released so far, with the latest arriving in May 2025.

Since then, fans have closely examined almost every Rockstar announcement, image and social media post for possible clues about the game’s release.

Some theories have become remarkably elaborate. Fans previously analysed an image of the moon featured in a Rockstar promotional post for GTA Online, believing it contained a hidden clue about when the first GTA 6 trailer would arrive.

Vermeij said Rockstar’s decision to reveal little information naturally encourages fans to scrutinise every small detail.

GTA 6 will return players to Vice City, the fictional setting inspired by Miami, while expanding the game world to include the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar’s reputation for creating large, highly detailed open worlds has made the sequel one of the most anticipated entertainment releases in years.

Will the Leaks Hurt GTA 6?

Despite the disruption caused by the leaked footage, industry observers do not expect the controversy to seriously damage the game’s commercial prospects.

Yin-Poole said players were likely to reserve judgement until they could see the official presentation or eventually experience the finished game themselves. He argued that the scale of GTA 6 means the leak is unlikely to derail what could become one of the biggest launches in gaming history.

Vermeij reached a similar conclusion, suggesting that most players will have moved on from the controversy by the time the game is finally released.

The immediate concern for Rockstar, however, is protecting its carefully controlled reveal strategy. After years of anticipation, the company now faces the challenge of reclaiming the narrative from unofficial footage and speculation.

For now, the apparent GTA 6 leaks may dominate online discussion, but the game’s official footage, release and eventual reception are likely to determine how significant the controversy becomes in the longer history of Rockstar’s most anticipated title.
