UN Delegation Visits St Patrick’s Cathedral as Roma Mushtaq Matto Highlights Interfaith Harmony

UN officials and Roma Mushtaq Matto visit St Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi to discuss religious harmony.
A United Nations delegation visited the historic St Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi, where Sindh Assembly member Roma Mushtaq Matto joined church leaders to discuss religious harmony and minority welfare.
The delegation was led by Mohamed Yahya, UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan. Afke Bootsman, Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, Pakistan, and Imran Khan Laghari, Provincial Coordinator for Sindh, also attended.
Church leaders welcomed the delegation and Roma Mushtaq Matto during the visit. They also briefed the guests about the cathedral’s history and religious importance.
Focus on Minority Welfare
The church administration highlighted its services to the Christian community. It also outlined various welfare and social initiatives.
Roma Mushtaq Matto said cooperation remains essential for promoting religious harmony in Pakistan. She stressed the need for tolerance, mutual respect and dialogue among different communities.
She also praised the UN’s work in humanitarian welfare and sustainable development. She highlighted its efforts on climate challenges, disaster response and support for vulnerable communities.

Cooperation for Social Inclusion
Matto said the Pakistan Peoples Party supports equality and the protection of minority rights. She added that the Sindh government continues to take steps for minority welfare.
She credited PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for supporting these efforts.
Matto said stronger cooperation could improve public welfare and social inclusion. She said partnerships among the Sindh government, UN agencies and religious institutions could support sustainable development.
She added that all religious communities in Pakistan should have equal opportunities. She described them as important partners in the country’s development.
UN Stresses Religious Harmony
Mohamed Yahya thanked the church administration and Roma Mushtaq Matto for their hospitality. He stressed the importance of cooperation to strengthen religious harmony and social inclusion.
The participants also discussed minority welfare and human development. Other topics included interfaith dialogue and community-level cooperation.
The visit ended in a cordial atmosphere. Participants expressed a shared commitment to peace, tolerance and mutual respect among Pakistan’s diverse religious communities.
