Imran Khan hospital transfer dispute between Shifa International Hospital and PIMS

PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khan speaks about his medical examination and hospital transfer

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has accused the government of disregarding a Supreme Court order concerning the medical treatment of party founder Imran Khan.

The Supreme Court had directed authorities to move the incarcerated former prime minister to Shifa International Hospital for treatment. However, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar later said Imran was taken to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

The development triggered criticism from the PTI, which questioned why authorities did not follow the court’s instructions.

Imran Taken to PIMS Instead of Shifa

Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan, said she was asked to reach Adiala Jail on Friday evening for his medical examination.

She said she arrived at the jail at around 8pm to 8:30pm with Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan.

According to Uzma, police officials later separated her from Dr Sultan.

She said a female assistant sub-inspector then took her to a vehicle without clearly explaining where she was being taken.

Uzma said she eventually reached PIMS.

She questioned the officials over the decision, saying the Supreme Court had ordered Imran’s treatment at Shifa International Hospital.

Authorities told her the visit was related to a follow-up examination of Imran’s eye, according to her account.

Sister Describes Meeting With Imran

Uzma said she eventually met Imran at PIMS after being taken upstairs inside the facility.

She said Imran appeared surprised to see her.

According to Uzma, he told doctors that she was his sister and that they were meeting after about 10 months.

She said she informed him that he was undergoing a check-up and would later be taken to Shifa International Hospital.

Doctors then examined his eye, according to Uzma.

She said several doctors were present, although she was familiar with only one of them, whom she identified as Dr Arif.

The doctors reportedly discussed additional tests and treatment. Uzma said they also administered an injection after examining Imran’s condition.

She later said doctors told her that his eye condition and haemorrhage had improved.

Imran Raises Concerns Over Prison Conditions

Uzma said Imran repeatedly complained about what he described as “cruelty” during his imprisonment.

According to her account, he alleged that he had been kept in isolation and denied access to reading material and television for an extended period.

Uzma also said Imran told her that prison doctors had not adequately responded when he complained about his health.

She further attributed claims to him about severe anxiety linked to what he described as mental pressure in solitary confinement.

These statements were presented by Uzma at the press conference and represent her account of Imran’s claims.

The Supreme Court had previously directed that medical reports and information about Imran’s health should not be used for political purposes.

Doctor Says He Waited at Shifa

Dr Faisal Sultan separately described confusion over Imran’s expected transfer.

He said authorities took him from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital.

According to Sultan, security arrangements were already in place when he arrived at the hospital.

He said he waited for approximately two to two and a half hours.

Sultan said he repeatedly asked officials when Imran would arrive. He was initially told that the former prime minister was on his way.

Later, around 4:15pm to 4:30pm, officials told him that Imran might not arrive and could have returned to Adiala Jail.

Sultan said he was then advised to leave the hospital.

Separate Hospitals Add to Confusion

Uzma said she saw Dr Sultan getting out of another vehicle when she returned to Adiala Jail.

The two then learned that they had been taken to separate hospitals.

Uzma said Imran’s message for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was to expedite his movement.

The PTI has continued to question the government’s handling of the medical transfer.

The episode has added to political tensions surrounding Imran Khan’s imprisonment and his ongoing medical treatment.
