Tom Holland returns as Spider-Man in the record-breaking opening of Brand New Day.
LOS ANGELES — Spider-Man returned to cinemas in spectacular fashion as Spider-Man: Brand New Day generated an estimated $927 million in worldwide ticket sales during its opening weekend, becoming the second-highest opening weekend of all time at both the global and North American box office.
The latest instalment stars Tom Holland in his fourth appearance as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya as MJ. The story follows Parker as he navigates a world that no longer remembers his identity while balancing crime-fighting with his search for friendship and human connection.
More than 100 words into its theatrical run, Spider-Man demonstrated its enduring global appeal by earning $355 million in the United States and Canada, while international markets contributed another $572 million. China led overseas markets with $121 million, highlighting the film’s strong global performance despite growing concerns over superhero fatigue in recent years.
Tom Rothman, Chairman and Chief Executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, said the film’s emotional themes of friendship and connection had resonated with audiences across generations.

According to box office data, Spider-Man: Brand New Day recorded the biggest domestic opening since the Covid-19 pandemic and now trails only Avengers: Endgame (2019), which opened with an inflation-adjusted $1.6 billion worldwide.
The film has also received widespread critical and audience acclaim, earning a 90% critics’ score and a 98% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian said the Spider-Man franchise is approaching $10 billion in worldwide theatrical revenue, underscoring the character’s enduring popularity in global cinema.
Entertainment researcher Greg Durkin said the film’s exploration of loneliness, isolation and friendship particularly resonated with younger audiences, especially Generation Z, who continue to face social and mental health challenges following the pandemic.
The blockbuster debut has further strengthened the summer movie season, joining major releases such as Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey in driving cinema attendance. Analysts said the combination of these films produced one of the strongest weekends ever for North American theatres.
Despite the record-breaking performance, overall domestic box office revenue remains below pre-pandemic levels. Year-to-date earnings are approximately 10% higher than last year but remain 16% below 2019 totals.
