ISLAMABAD, February 23, 2026: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Waqar Mehdi has strongly condemned the remarks made at Governor House Karachi regarding the division of Sindh, declaring that no power on earth can separate Karachi from Sindh.

Challenging the MQM, he said the party should honestly compare the performance of its three former mayors with the three-year record of the current PPP mayor, which, he asserted, speaks for itself.

He further said that under the watch of the Federal Minister for Education, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, the historic Federal Urdu University in Karachi has fallen into severe decline, yet the federal minister has remained indifferent to the worsening situation.

While addressing the Upper House of Pakistan’s Parliament, PPP Senator Waqar Mehdi—who also serves as the General Secretary of PPP Sindh chapter—said that no condemnation would be strong enough for those advocating the division of Sindh. He said that during a so-called educational conference held at Governor House Karachi under a pre-planned agenda, objectionable remarks regarding the division of Sindh were made, and that everything except education was discussed at the event. He pointed out that MQM has had three mayors in Karachi—Dr. Farooq Sattar, Mustafa Kamal, and Wasim Akhtar—while Jamaat-e-Islami has also held the mayor’s office three times. Furthermore, he said, MQM has remained part of nearly every federal government over the past four decades. He challenged MQM to present its performance record, asking what tangible contributions it has made for Karachi and how many of the city’s youth it secured employment for in federal institutions during its prolonged tenure in power. He added that the Federal Urdu University, which falls under the authority of Federal Minister for Education Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, is currently facing serious administrative and academic challenges affecting teachers, students, and staff, yet the Federal Ministry of Education has failed to take meaningful notice of the deteriorating situation.

Senator Waqar Mehdi said that the three-year performance of the PPP’s mayor, Murtaza Wahab, is more substantial and visible than MQM’s forty years in power. He emphasized that the PPP believes in serving the people without discrimination and has never ignored any locality on the basis of electoral support. Highlighting the party’s legacy, he recalled that Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto established Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in Nazimabad and developed the Super Market in Liaquatabad, while Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, during her tenure as Prime Minister, announced a Rs121 billion development package for Karachi. He said that despite limited resources, the PPP’s provincial government continues to undertake practical measures to improve civic facilities and accelerate Karachi’s development. He said that multi-billion-rupee projects, including the construction of Shahrah-e-Bhutto, have been completed, while several other major development schemes are currently underway in the city.

Senator Waqar Mehdi also expressed full support for the resolution presented in the Sindh Assembly and paid tribute to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for tabling the historic resolution against the division of Sindh, as well as to the assembly members who endorsed and supported it.
