KARACHI : Pakistan Railways Freight Division Karachi Exceeds Targets, Delivering Record Revenue in August 2024
Pakistan Railways has reported impressive performance in freight operations for the month of August 2024, surpassing its allocated targets and achieving substantial growth. In a remarkable achievement, 460,109 tons of cargo were transported to various upcountry destinations through 15,393 railway wagons, resulting in a revenue of PKR 2,393 million being deposited into the government exchequer. This achievement has not only exceeded expectations but also demonstrated Pakistan Railways’ commitment to enhancing freight operations.
The cargo transported in August 2024 comprised diverse commodities, including 205,920 tons of coal, 136,290 tons of container cargo, and 43,560 tons of raw phosphate, along with other miscellaneous loose cargo. This diverse mix of goods reflects the expanding role of Pakistan Railways in supporting the country’s logistics and supply chain requirements.
Significantly, the allocated freight budget for August 2024 was PKR 1,749 million. However, the actual revenue generated from freight operations exceeded this target by PKR 643 million, representing a 37% increase over the budgeted amount. This surplus revenue highlights the growing efficiency and demand for Pakistan Railways’ freight services.
In the first two months of the fiscal year 2024-2025, Pakistan Railways Karachi Division has demonstrated even more significant growth. Against the allocated freight target of PKR 2,840 million, the division has generated PKR 4,298 million, marking a remarkable increase of PKR 1,458 million – a 51% rise over the target.
For the fiscal year 2023-2024, the Karachi Division had an allocated freight revenue target of PKR 18,813 million. However, the division surpassed this target, earning PKR 23,296 million, which is an impressive PKR 4,483 million above the initial target.
Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways, Karachi, Mr. Nasir Khalily, expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the freight team. He commended their efforts and reiterated that in the coming months, additional resources will be focused on increasing the number of freight trains originating from Karachi. These expansions will be carefully managed through meticulous analysis of demand and supply dynamics, and by increasing the turnaround of the rolling stock, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
Mr. Nasir Khalily emphasized that the Karachi Division’s success is a testament to the dedication of the freight team and the strategic focus on improving turnaround times, optimizing resources, and expanding services to meet the increasing demand.
