GAZA CITY — The Palestinian Health Ministry reported on Monday that the death toll in Gaza has reached 72,280 people since Israel’s military operations began in October 2023, with 172,014 others wounded. In the past 24 hours alone, two people were killed and a third injured by Israeli fire.

Since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, at least 704 Palestinians have died and 1,914 more were injured, the ministry said. Authorities have recovered 756 bodies from rubble since the ceasefire.
The offensive has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza and destroyed 90% of civilian infrastructure, with the United Nations estimating reconstruction costs at around $70 billion.
Meanwhile, Israel’s parliament is set to vote on a bill that would impose the death penalty as a default sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of killing Israelis. The measure, proposed by far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, mandates sentencing within 90 days with no right to clemency. Critics argue the law unfairly targets Palestinians in the West Bank, where military courts exclusively try Palestinians and maintain near-100% conviction rates.
Rights groups and European allies of Israel have raised concerns that the bill could further exacerbate tensions in the occupied territories.
