Karachi: Newport Institute of Communication and Economics (Nice) took the field in the tournament among 24 teams of university students organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to develop new talent in cricket. According to HEC, Cricket being a global craze is a much practised sport. The sports year of Higher Education Commission (HEC) 2022-2023 saw the rise of new talent and the shine of their universities. Zone M, with 24 Universities, cricket was assigned to Dow university of Health Sciences by HEC. The matches were formatted with 40 overs to be played in white kits with a red ball. The managers’ meeting was held on the 23rd of February, 2023 and the matches started from the next day. Eight Universities namely, Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), Aga Khan University (AKU), New Port Institute of Communication and Economics (NICE), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), NED, Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and Indus University participated in the tournament, out of which SSUET, NICE, NED and IoBM reached the semi finals. The matches were all full of energy and surprises. The changing scenes and unpredictable outcomes made each and every match too much fun. The tournament reached the final match after 4 knockout matches and 2 thrilling semi finals. DUHS organized the tournament in the best possible manner, with a well maintained pitch and a welcoming ground. Above all, the weather being pleasant supported the tournament . IoBM and NICE teams presented a spectacular game, engaged the audience completely focussed on each and every ball. Victory was bagged by NICE team after a well played match. The prize distribution was conducted in the presence of registrar DUHS, Dr Ashar Afaq, Director Sports SSUET Mr. Mubashir Mukhtar and DUHS organizing team while trophies were handed over to the winners and runner up team by HEC Director/Incharge Sports and Co-Curricular activities, Javed Memon. The efforts of HEC and the sports fraternity for the promotion of sports is commendable and worth appreciation.
