Dominant England on Thursday crushed defending-champion Australia by eight wickets as cricket fraternity prepares to welcome new world champion on July 14th.
England will face New Zealand in the finale at Lord’s.
Chasing a below-par target of 224 runs, English openers started cautiously but switched gear soon. Roy and Bairstow hit Aussies all-over the ground and added 124-runs for the first wicket to slash Aussies’ hopes of lifting the trophy for the record sixth time.
Bairstow was the first to depart on individual score of 34 runs. Roy followed the suit soon, though in a controversial fashion. Roy made 85 runs and in doing so, the right-hand batsman hit nine boundaries and five maximums.
However, Morgan and Root ensured that there was no further loss as they achieved the target in 32nd over. Eoin Morgan and Joey Root remained unbeaten on 45 and 49 respectively.
Chris Woods was declared MoM.
Starc and Cummins picked one wicket apiece. Also, it is for the first time that England have defeated Australia in a World Cup encounter since 1992.
Earlier today, Steve Smith saved Australia’s blushes with a gutsy 85 to help the defending champions post 223 all out in 49 overs against England in the second semi-final of the Cricket World Cup.
