Pakistan: The Pakistani military has made headlines with the arrest of Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, the former head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). This is a historic move as it’s the first time a current or former ISI chief has faced court-martial proceedings. The arrest is seen as part of a crackdown on supporters of the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had appointed Hameed to the position.
On Monday, the military announced that Hameed is being charged with corruption related to a 2017 scandal involving a private housing project in Islamabad. It’s alleged that he and his brother tried to take control of the project through intimidation. Additionally, Hameed is accused of breaching the Pakistan Army Act by engaging in political activities after his retirement in 2022, which is not allowed for two years post-retirement.
